Municipal Advisory Committee

Attacks Equestrians & Rename Section 6 a "Conservation Area"

Following the trail closure notice in December 2007, the Joshua Tree Municipal Advisory Committee (a group of political appointees) began taking public actions the now show their true intentions.
  • On February 16, 2008, the MAC held a public meeting at the Joshua Tree Community Center about how to protect Section 6. (see below)   In the public notice they sent our, they reference a "large tortoise populations" state that Section 6 is "under attack" from equestrian (and others).   The implication was the equestrians were damaging federally protected species.  The special district staff had also mentioned "desert tortoises" as justification for the trail closure policy.  Anyway, whether or not tortoise are present are facts that be readily determined.  However, absent an environments assessment or inventory, merely making such statements does not make them true.  See this <link>  to jump to the notice below.

  • On March 13, 2008, the MAC section 6 subcommittee held a public meeting at the Joshua Tree Community Center .  Based on the invitation, it appears as if they have renamed the land "the Desert Conservation Area"  See this <link> to jump to the notice below.

MAC Attacks Equestrians (and others)

        Protecting Section 6 Park
                  Celeste Doyle

Few things get local residents' attention as quickly as Section 6 Park. This pristine square mile of desert came to the residents of Joshua Tree in the 1960's from BLM. It has a large tortoise population and spectacular wild flower displays after the winter rains.  It is also under attack from  OHV's, off-trail horseback riders, illegal shooters, and unauthorized campers.

Last year Joshua Tree MAC, recognizing that the one thing most people in Joshua Tree agreed upon was protecting Section 6, put out a call for interested volunteers. At an impassioned meeting, a subcommittee was formed under the leadership of Celeste Doyle to weigh the options and bring back recommendations.

Celeste will be our guest speaker on Saturday, February, 16. She will update the community on the sub committee's suggestions for protecting Section 6. She will also be interested in your input.
